Just like other parts of the human body, the eyes are susceptible to infection from bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Not sure exactly what an eye infection might look or feel like?

Here is a guide to the symptoms to look out for, as well as tips on how to manage these symptoms before your exam.

Common Eye Infection Symptoms and Causes

The most common type of eye infection is known as conjunctivitis (often called pink eye), which is usually caused by a type of cold virus. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and common in children. Conjunctivitis can also be caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Bacterial conjunctivitis tends to take longer to clear up.

Another common viral eye infection is caused by the Herpes simplex virus while another common bacterial infection known as a sty occurs when the oil glands in your eyelid become infected. Though more rare, fungal and parasitic eye infections are also possible.

Some of the most common symptoms of an eye infection include:
• Red eyes
• Swollen eyes
• Tearing or mucus discharge
• Sore or painful eyes
• Flaking skin around the eyes
• Itchy or irritated eyes
• A burning sensation
• The sensation of something in your eye
• Fever and swollen lymph nodes

No matter what type of eye infection you suspect you might have, it is always best to have your condition diagnosed by a professional eye doctor in Edmonton at one of our clinics.

What to Do If You Have an Eye Infection

Contact lens wearers can often find relief from removing their contacts and switching to eyeglasses while they wait for their appointment. A warm compress can also be used to reduce mild pain and swelling. If both your eyes are swollen and itchy, then your symptoms may be due to allergies and an antihistamine might help.

It is important to note that, if you are experiencing more generalized facial swelling accompanied by a fever, flaking skin, and skin that feels hot to the touch, then you should schedule an emergency appointment and head to a clinic immediately.
