What is the Origin of Chiropractic Care?

DD Palmer, a shopkeeper, a teacher, beekeeper and a tradesman of different types experienced a vision of Ms. Eddy, who was the proliferator of Christian Science, came to DD in a dream. From that dream, where DD focused on the body and a way to alleviate dis-ease (as opposed to ease) was the act of removing said dis-ease with the hands via an adjustment.

His first patient was a local janitor by the name of Harvey Lillard. Apparently, Lillard was deaf, and when worked on by DD, the deafness was alleviated, and hearing was restored.

From then, DD decided to develop this art into a science and from studying human anatomy extensively with cadavers and living people, he came up with correlations with the state of how the spinal cord behaved with respect to various pathologies running interference with the nerves stemming from the spinal cord.

It’s been over a hundred years since chiropractic has been around. Chiropractors have the mission of anyone with the letters of “Dr.” in front of our names: our chief job is to educate. The early pioneers like Logan, Gonstead, Cox and Holder have started off with anecdotal evidence with what we do, ranging all the way throughout the years to randomized control trials involving a number of conditions showing that what we do is safe AND effective, in addition to the Cochrane meta-analyses demonstrating similar claims, ranging from endorsement with conditions that range from low-back pain, cervicogenic headaches, stress, PTSD and many others.

Like any other modality a patient chooses to engage in, there are risks to everything; most commonly, muscle soreness felt post-adjustment especially if it’s a first-time adjustment. Joints are being placed by the chiropractor back into their rightful position which therein affects the nerve output to the rest of the body due to the subluxation being located at that specific area. What’s a subluxation? In the easiest terms, its a term that describes a nerve interference. Ever felt tooth pain due to cavity? A cavity describes a subluxated state of the mouth, for example.

Subluxation describes basically a state where stuff is not running optimally for a variety of reasons, namely mentally (e.g. stress), chemically (e.g. ingestion of something the body is rejecting), or physically (e.g. like a nerve being physically irritated.)

A greater sense of restored calm and ability for increased range of motion, decreased pain….these are but a scant few of the benefits of regular chiropractic care.

Those who choose chiropractic care are those who know that when they’re in our hands, that we know the body like no other practitioner and we address the primary reason why people are ill. A good chiropractor will not continue to treat your compensations, and will not waste your time (or money) nor theirs in adjusting and re-adjusting areas of the body that are not the problem.

The goal of chiropractic is always: remove interference from the body’s nervous system so that the individual can heal accordingly and be at their most functional, amazing, awesome, positive, kick-ass version of itself.
