Aging is inevitable, and with it comes visible signs like graying hair, hair loss, and those unwanted wrinkles. But while aging cannot be slowed, the appearance of its signs can — maintaining a healthy lifestyle and sticking to a regulated diet can help with this.

To keep your body finely toned and your mind razor sharp, Bhaskar Health created a list of 11 drinks that will help you age gracefully.

1.

Historically, coffee has gotten a bad name, but new research shows that much of that was false. Moreover, there’s evidence now that caffeine protects the body against chronic inflammation, a common problem as you age. Also, drinking coffee lowers the risk of skin cancer. A study published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention found that those who drank one cup of coffee every day reduced their risk of developing non-melanoma skin cancer by about 10%.

2.

Add fruits like bananas and berries to Greek yogurt to make this delicious anti-aging smoothie. Ripe bananas are rich in pectin which keeps the sugar level in the body under control. Pectin also helps to remove harmful toxins from the body, which is essential to slowing down the aging process. On the other hand, berries are a rich source of vitamin C, which helps keep your skin supple and radiant.

3.

While drinking wine heavily or binge drinking can severely damage your liver and make you appear older than you actually are, drinking in moderation reduces inflammation and the diseases that are associated with getting old. Also, drinking moderately, (a glass a day for women and 2 for men) can ward off dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The drink of choice should, however, be red wine since it contains the beneficial “resveratrol.”

4.

The adult human body is about 65% water, therefore, keeping the body hydrated is important for the proper function of various organs, and our skin is our largest visible organ. Without proper hydration, the skin can become dry and wrinkled, and look aged. Drinking water also helps us to flush out harmful toxins from the body and keeps us looking fresh and young.

5.

Green tea is rich in an anti-aging antioxidant which helps prevents wrinkles from appearing by increasing cell turnover. You can also create a face mask to freshen your skin by mixing green tea powder with brewed white tea. Also, various studies have concluded that people who regularly consume green and black tea have a reduced risk of heart disease.

6.

Beets are rich in naturally occurring, healthy nitrates which, according to a 2011 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Nitric Oxide, provide a boost in blood flow to the frontal lobe of the brain, thereby reducing the chances of dementia and age-related cognitive decline. The antioxidants in beetroot can protect the body from free radicals and fight wrinkles.

7.

Almond milk contains vitamins A, D, and E which can keep your skin healthy and younger-looking. It is also rich in calcium and protein which helps keep your nails and hair strong and supple.

Avocados are packed with monounsaturated fats that provide the glow to your skin while bananas contain vitamins A, B, and E, all of which are excellent for your skin as well.

8.

Our body requires vitamin C to produce collagen which increases the plumpness and suppleness of your skin. Grapefruit is rich in vitamin C, therefore, drinking a glass of grapefruit juice will not only reduce wrinkles, but it will also make your skin appear fuller and more youthful. Also, since it’s rich in the anti-oxidant “retinol,” grapefruit helps to repair damaged skin and treat skin pigmentation.

9.

Coconut water is rich in minerals and electrolytes, which are essential for the healthy metabolism of amino acids, lipids, and carbohydrates, and for improving the distribution of nutrients received from food. Also, coconut water contains a plant hormone called cytokinin which promotes cellular growth. Cytokinins are also known to be anti-carcinogenic.

10.

Aloe Vera juice contains plenty of amino acids and nutrients that help to increase collagen production in the body. The antioxidants present in the juice also promote skin regeneration, while helping to maintain its suppleness.

11.

Studies show that starting in our thirties we lose 1/2 to 1% of our lean muscle mass each year. Also, muscle strength declines by 12 to 15 percent per decade. Leucine—one of the 9 amino acids in the human body—is particularly good at reversing this trend. In fact, it not only helps in regulating muscle growth, but also in the regulation of blood-sugar levels and in wound healing. Milk also contains whey protein, which is an excellent source of leucine.
