Bruce Willis’ Wife: Caring for Family is Taking ‘Toll’ on Mental Health

Emma Heming Willis admits she’s struggling amid husband Bruce Willis’ aphasia diagnosis.

“I put my family’s needs above my own, which I found does not make me any kind of hero,” the model, 43, told The Bump in an interview published Thursday.

“That amount of care for everyone else within my household had taken a toll on my mental health and overall health,” she continued. “And it served no one in my family.”

Emma – who shares daughters Mabel, 10, and Evelyn, 8, with the 67-year-old actor – added that she’s now learning how to “mother” herself and being intentional about “making the time for self-care” daily.

“Someone told me not long ago that when you over-care for someone, you end up under-caring for yourself,” she explained. “That stopped me in my tracks and really resonated with me.”

Instead, Emma chooses to focus on her “basic baseline needs,” including exercise.

“It’s a time I can disconnect and can do something that I know makes me feel good overall,” she told the outlet of working out. “I think it’s important to find that one thing that makes you feel good and build from there.”

Emma revealed Bruce’s recent health struggles in March, posting a joint statement with the “Die Hard” star’s ex-wife, Demi Moore, and the former couple’s daughters — Rumer, 33, Scout, 30, and Tallulah, 28.

“With much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him,” their social media uploads announced at the time.

The statement concluded with a quote from Bruce, reading, “‘Live it up.’ … Together we plan to do just that.”“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit.”

Emma posted sweet new shots with her husband the following month during an “off the grid” camping trip. “Mom & Dad in their favorite habitat,” she wrote in April.

The “Red 2” star wed Bruce in March 2009, and they welcomed Mabel and Evelyn in 2012 and 2014, respectively.

The Golden Globe winner was previously married to Moore, 59, from 1987 to 2000.
